PATCHWORK RUGS

Patchwork overdyed rugs originated and first came to prominence in Turkey bringing old hand woven rugs back to life through a thorough revitalizing process. This time consuming and skilful process begins with the washing of the old rugs. Depending on the desired look for each individual rug, the rugs are shaved to reduce the pile height and give the “distressed” appearance. Following this, the rugs are methodically decolourized through chemical washes and sun bleaching. Once this is complete, the rugs are then dyed in one colour – a process that could be repeated several times in order to reach the desired shade of colour. The rugs are the laundered and set to dry. Once dry, many of the rugs are cut into smaller pieces in varying shapes and sizes and hand sewn together with a sturdy woolen yarn. All patchworks then have a cotton cloth backing hand sewn to it before it is finally washed and available in our showroom.
